Faucets are basically taps that control flow of liquids. They are made in different types and sizes depending on where they are used. They can have a single tap, two taps, single hole or three holes. No matter the specific features, their main objective is to let out running fluids like soap dispensers, juices and water. Most taps in households are water taps. They take different shapes and sizes depending on their location and their use, number of people using them and the demographic characteristics of the users.
Components
The main features that influence the functionality of a faucet are valves, aerators, water inlets, cartridge, spout and handles. Valves control water flow. They are of four types:
- Compression valves have a screw stem and a rubber washer at the bottom of the stem. The screw stem raises and lowers when the tap is turned to allow water flow. These valves are used in taps with two handles.
- Ball valves are used in single handle taps. They have grooves and holes that align with water inlets when the handle is turned to control water temperature and flow.
- Cartridge valves can be used in both single handle and two handled taps. It is made of a cylinder with networks of channels which control flow rate and water temperature. They have O-ring seals to control water leaks.
- Ceramic disk valves are made of rotating ceramic disks. They have channels that align when rotated to control water flow and temperature. Aerators are found at the tip of a tap. They combine air with flowing water to reduce the volume of water flowing without affecting its pressure. Use of aerators reduces both noise made by flowing water and the splashing effects of water. The spout is the pipe through which water flows into a sink while handles are used to allow or stop water flow.
Accessories
Faucet accessories are used together with the tap for easier and better functionality of water systems. They include hole covers which are used to cover holes in sinks, and pop up drains which use levers to move drain stoppers up and down a sink bowl to control water drainage. A hose can also be attached to the tap to increase the reach, especially when water is being used away from the tap. Grease is used to lubricate parts of the plumbing system so as to reduce friction. This grease is oxidation-resilient and water-resistant, which further helps in increasing the useful life of materials used. Spout covers are recent faucet accessories which are mainly made of plastic. They are placed on top of taps, especially in bathtubs, to prevent injuries in case of a slip, especially for children.
